Azumah Nelson, The ‘Professor’ as he is affectionately known by Ghanaians was born on the 19th of July 1958.  He was a professional boxer who competed from  1979 to 2008.  A world champion, he held the WBC featherweight champion’s belt from 1984 to 1987 and the WBC super-featherweight title between 1988 and 1997.  He also challenged for the unified IBF and WBC lightweight titles in 1990.  He held the ABU and Commonwealth featherweight titles between 1980 and 1982 and is regarded as one of the greatest African boxers of all time.  Box Rec ranks him as the 31st greatest pound for pound boxer of all time.  He won world titles in two different weight divisions (junior lightweight and featherweight) with a record of 39 wins, 28 by knockout, 6 losses, and 2 draws.  He competed in the All-Africa Games in 1978 winning gold medals in the featherweight division at both events.  He was awarded by the Sports Writers Association of Ghana (SWAG) in that very year.  Nelson’s fights were classic, and he sparred with legends like Salvador Sanchez, Jeff French and Wilfredo Gomez.  His technical skills were excellent, and he is at heart a gentle, people loving man.  After he retired, Nelson became a promoter, and his interest was more focused on the next generation of young Ghanaian boxers.
