Felicia Afia Dansoa Darkwah was born on Friday 10th July, 1938 in Asuom in the Kwaebibirim District of the Eastern Region of Ghana. Because her father’s job with a diamond company required her family to relocate on a number of occasions, her primary school education was split between Ghana and Sierra Leone. After her basic education, she trained as an Auxilliary Nurse i.e., Qualified Registered Nurse (QRN) at the Consolidated African Selection Trust (CAST) Hospital in Akwatia after which she trained as a midwife at Mampong Maternity Hospital in Mampong Asante. She would later further her education at the Croydon General Hospital and the University of Surrey both in the United Kingdom.  She would earn her Master of Science Degree and Postgraduate Diploma in Midwifery from the latter institution.

Her professional career included stints at Ridge Hospital as a staff nurse and Korle Bu Teaching Hospital as a midwifery tutor after which she established and run the Rafeto Maternity Clinic in Madina for almost a decade.  In her later years, she taught at the University of Ghana’s Department of Nursing.  Upon retirement, she developed the Nursing and Midwifery Graduate programme for the Valley View University in Oyibi and the two-year post Nursing graduate programme for the Garden City University College as well as the Nightingale  School of Nursing.  She also run the Nana Yaa Memorial Trust Centre, set up in honour of one of her daughters who died during childbirth.  The Centre managed over six thousand clients over the period of its establishment.  For her work in this regard, the African Women’s Development Fund presented her with the Woman of Substance Award in 2016.
