Lieutenant General Emmanuel Alexander Erskine was born on 19th January 1935 and dedicated most of his life to serving Ghana and promoting peace across the world. Through hard work, discipline, and professionalism, he rose through the ranks of the Ghana Army to become one of the country’s most respected military leaders.

As part of his military training, he attended the prestigious Royal Military Academy Sandhurst in the United Kingdom, one of the world’s leading military academies, where many distinguished military leaders have been trained.

Throughout his military career, Lieutenant General Erskine held several important appointments. Between 1972 and 1974, he served as the Chief of Army Staff, making him the professional head of the Ghana Army.

His exceptional leadership soon earned him international recognition. In 1974, he was appointed Chief of Staff and Deputy Force Commander of the United Nations Emergency Force II (UNEF II) in Egypt. He later served as the Chief of Staff of the United Nations Truce Supervision Organization (UNTSO) in Palestine from 1976 to 1978, and again from 1981 to 1986.

Perhaps his greatest achievement came in 1978, when he became the first-ever Force Commander of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL). As the pioneer commander, he led thousands of peacekeepers from different countries during one of the most difficult periods in southern Lebanon. His professionalism, courage, and leadership earned him worldwide respect and made Ghana proud on the international stage.

After retiring from active military service, Lieutenant General Erskine continued serving his country in public life. He became one of the founding members of the People’s Heritage Party (PHP) and contested Ghana’s 1992 presidential election, demonstrating his commitment to national development through democratic leadership.

He later served as a Commissioner of Ghana’s National Reconciliation Commission, where he helped investigate human rights abuses that occurred during various military governments. He also became actively involved in international peace advocacy through organisations such as the Pugwash Conferences on Science and World Affairs and the Ghana Action Network on Small Arms (GANSA).

His outstanding service earned him numerous national and international honours. Among them was the National Order of the Cedar, Lebanon’s highest national honour, awarded in recognition of his exceptional contribution to peace in the country. He was also honoured with the Member of the Star of Ghana and the Distinguished Service Order (Military Division).

Lieutenant General Emmanuel Alexander Erskine passed away on 7th May 2021 at the age of 86.
